Subway Safety At Risk

What is OPTO? Should the public be consulted?

TTC Line 1 subway trains currently have two crew members: The Operator at the front, who focuses on driving the train and the Guard at the back, who is responsible for passenger safety.

OPTO stands for One-Person-Train-Operation. It means exactly what it says: the TTC wants to eliminate the Guards at the back of the train and transfer all their safety-related duties to the Operator.

The TTC has no plans to consult the public on this major change to public transit safety. When polled, however, 71% of Torontonians oppose OPTO and 84% want to be consulted first.
